Open Space Loss and Land Inequality in United States' Cities, 1990–2000

Posted in | »

There is an interesting article over at PloS One about recent changes in open space around cities in the US. The major result of the paper was that per capita land consumption is declining almost everywhere (indicating higher density as cities grow), but it is declining faster in areas with "reform" minded zoning and where there is greater spending on conservation efforts.

As someone who sometimes grades graduate student papers, I think this is humorous... and actually useful.

(Actually, I have to use a spell checker religiously, a product of my alternative early education that did not stress repetition and memorization. I wonder also whether there are different cognitive archetypes -- my brain is wired for seeing large scale patterns. I read at the sentence and paragraph level rather than seeing letters.)

Elvis Costello ACL taping

Posted in | »

Just got home from seeing Elvis Costello taping live in the Austin City Limits studio. Wow. Great show. It was great also to see Jerry Douglas (bluegrass dobro legend) in the band. They said the show will air November 7.

Local cartoonist Austin Kleon made a few sketches after the show.
